Be safe in the sun!

We usually think more about sun protection in hotter climates, but even in cooler climates, the sun’s powerful rays can reflect off snow or ice and are strong enough to burn – even on a cloudy day. So whether you’re golfing in Florida or skiing in Vermont, don’t let a little sun spoil your good times.

If you’re planning an outdoor family get together, here are some tips to keep everyone sun safe and sound:
  • Use a broad-spectrum sunscreen which protects against both UVA and UVB rays with an SPF of 15 or higher.

  • Opt for water and sweat-proof sunscreen, especially if you’ll be swimming, skiing or doing an activity where you might work up a sweat! Remember to reapply throughout the day, especially after activities.

  • Ensure you have plenty of places to sit in the shade. Encourage everyone to keep out of the sun during the peak hours of 11 a.m. and 4 p.m.

  • Have sun hats and toques on hand for people to cover up. Always do outdoor activities with UVA/UVB treated sunglasses, your eyes need protection from the sun as well.

  • Keep lots of refreshing drinks on hand so people can stay hydrated. Offer plenty of water and sports drinks, or try whipping up a batch of non-alcoholic punch, fresh lemonade, apple cider or hot chocolate to quench everyone’s thirst.

A little planning ahead will help everyone feel good, no matter what climate you’re in!
